Embarking on a journey in a foreign land, particularly one with a richly diverse culture and language, unfolds as a challenging yet profoundly enriching experience. Drawing from personal challenges during my relocation to Australia, I've come to appreciate the significance of adapting to new surroundings and conquering uncertainties. Today, join me in exploring the valuable insights shared by fellow expats living in Japan. Their stories illuminate the unique experiences and gentle challenges encountered, aiming to foster a sense of solidarity among those who may find resonance in these shared narratives.
Overcoming Language Hurdles
One of the most significant hurdles faced by expats is language proficiency—speaking, listening, and reading fluency. Achieving comfort with your Japanese level is a lengthy journey, but life must go on.
Grocery Shopping Challenges:
In supermarkets, language barriers pose challenges for our teammates. Some express, "We use limited Japanese groceries because we do not completely understand and visualise the ingredients." Others share, "When I first came to Japan, I couldn't speak Japanese at all, making it challenging to find the products I needed at the supermarket, as most of them only had Japanese names."
Specific Items and Cultural Nuances
Our teammates have highlighted struggles in finding specific items, such as cosmetics and flour. Navigating through the plethora of available cosmetics to find what suits you can be daunting, especially when it comes to basic skincare products. The flour options are again very typical thing by country, I found. Especially when you are looking for a particular type of flour, you may face to challenges. It is tend to hard to find non-white flour in general supermarkets. You may need to access to Amazon…
Dealing with Stressful Situations:
Stressful situations, particularly regarding hospital treatment, are a common concern. Despite the challenges, our team showcases resilience in navigating unfamiliar healthcare systems in Japan. Language barriers persist, but our members utilise Google Translate and body language to navigate through these situations.
Public Perception and Parenting Challenges:
Diving into challenges related to public perception, having children speak non-Japanese in loud voices is mentioned as a stressful scenario. Parenting is a universal experience, and while it might be embarrassing to have louder kids in public, most people understand the joys and challenges of raising children even in Japan :)
Google Translate Challenges:
Exploring the utility of Google Translate, while it now provides a fairly good English translation, some team members have experienced challenges. Japanese shop staff sometimes avoid them before questions or assistance can be sought.
Advocating for Multilingual Services:
Recognising Japan's need for improvement in multilingual services, especially in hospitals, legal matters, and child-related services, our team emphasises the potential impact on different expat demographics. They advocate for increased accessibility. Enriched Living - Body and Spirit includes a section in Japanese to share insights with the local community, hoping to contribute positively to the expat experience in Japan.
